She’s done being a virgin. He’s willing to help her out. Only now he has a problem of his own: He can’t stop wanting more.

The answer has to be no, of course. No way Griff Ambrose is going to help Becca Drake lose her virginity. Not only is she his friend’s little sister, but Griff doesn’t do commitment—not since the day he came home from war to find his house empty and his wife gone.

But he can’t get Becca’s request—or pretty much anything else about her—out of his head. What can it hurt, anyway? If it’s awkward afterwards, they can just avoid each other. Right?

Becca Drake has turned her life around, and she’s proud of how much butt she’s kicking. The shy girl with the self-esteem problem has been shown the door, and New Becca’s in the driver’s seat. There’s just one more demon she has to exorcise. Virginity is messing up her sex life. Guys who might be okay with giving her a test drive act like they’re being auditioned for marriage when they find out she’s never had intercourse.

Griff is the perfect candidate to do the deed: He’s her friend, he’s sexy as heck, and neither of them wants anything serious.

Then Becca’s job goes belly up and she takes a temporary position at the veterans’ retreat where Griff works. Now she and Griff can’t stay out of each other’s way—and their entanglement keeps getting messier—and sexier. Worst of all, it’s getting harder and harder for Becca and Griff to lie to themselves about what they really want…

4 - "Amazing... Every time." Stars!

The fourth book in Serena Bell’s Returning Home series gives us Griff and Becca’s story. Holding Out initially starts with a couple who originally agree on one night together for a specific reason, in that Becca wishes to lose her virginity.

"If you hire Griff Ambrose for a job, he’s going to do it right."

Griff having been burned by love previously is happy to take up the challenge as long as Becca understands it will be a strictly ‘one and done’ deal.

"The first rule of Operation V-Card is, there is no operation V-Card…"

Both coming from a close group of friends, that include Becca’s older sister, who is incidentally married to Griff’s best friend brings about its own set of challenges in keeping things on the down low, especially after the deed is done Griff realises that he may not actually see Becca in the same light as his previous one-night stands. They may have had the one, but Griff is far from done… And Becca is fully on-board with the plan.

"It seems like we’re actually not done."

A nice easy read, nothing new or shocking about the plot. I am still not a massive fan of 1st POV, but it was well executed in this instance, particularly with dual POV also giving us both sides of the story, and allowing us into their heads at the right times. I’ve enjoyed Serena’s work for a while now and Holding Out was a great addition to the Returning Home series.

Becca was holding out for that special man who deserved to take what she saw as her most valuable possession, but he hasn’t come along yet, and she isn’t getting any younger or happier about her situation. Why not turn to the man who wants no commitment, wants a one and one relationship and has the experience to make losing her virginity one to remember with passion forever? It doesn’t hurt that Griff is handsome and charming, either. Too bad he is her brother-in-law’s best friend which puts him clearly in the off limits category.

Serena Bell’s HOLDING out has its moments of humor, pain and heat in spades. It also brings two very damaged people together in a very intimate way. Did they really think they could have a “one and done?” Would they discover it’s their personal demons and interfering friends and family that are a bigger threat to their cautious attraction?

I loved Griff’s development, Becca was a little too infatuated with her virginity and feelings of self-worth to really make me like her. And all of that interference from friends and family? A bit much, perhaps, as they are both adults, not children.

Seriously, it was a good read, topped off with some fun “sexy” times and amazing moments unrelated to losing the V Card that made this book for me. Serena Bell is an excellent creator of wonderful romances and this series is definitely worth the read. I guess this one just isn't one of my favorites.

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Serena Bell!

4 stars!

I loved this book. A friends-to-friends-with-benefits-to-lovers romance that is fun, sweet and heartfelt with fantastic characters and a sexy and emotional love story, I was completely hooked!

This is book #4 in the Returning Home series, but you can read this as a standalone. The characters from previous books all appear as the main group of friends, but you don’t have to have read their stories to enjoy this one.

Becca is the younger sister of Alia from book #2, Can't Hold Back. She had a difficult childhood, she struggled at school and she never really felt good enough. She has pushed past that though, and has created a good life for herself. There’s just one problem – she’s 24 years old and still a virgin, and that is becoming a barrier in her love life as her virginity either scares guys away or attracts weirdo fetishists. So she’s on the hunt for somebody to help her pop her cherry without drama so that she can hopefully move forward and find a normal relationship.

Griff is a good friend of Becca’s brother-in-law, Nate, and is a member of their close circle of friends. An Army veteran, he battles PTSD, and was left even further shattered when he came home from deployment to find his wife had left him for somebody else. He now wants nothing to do with relationships and enjoys short hook-ups with woman with no fear of relationships or feelings becoming involved.

Becca and Griff are already friends, but when an attraction flares between them, she realises that he could be the perfect man to help her with her situation – he’s gorgeous, he’s a sweetheart, and he wouldn’t make things weird between them. And just being around him brings her body to life like nothing she’s ever experienced. Griff is, understandably, stunned by Becca’s offer but after some intense deliberation he realises that Becca deserves for her first time to be special and perfect, and that he’s just the man for the job. And, of course, there’s the fact that he can’t get the little spitfire out of his head.

He wanted to find out what would happen when the chemistry between them had a chance to play itself out.
It could be epic.

OMG, Griff is so gorgeous! Yes, he’s a bit of a player, but he’s so freaking gorgeous when it comes to Becca. He’s sweet and playful, he puts her at ease and he treats her like a goddess, and he handles the whole thing so beautifully!

“I know you don’t want to make a big deal of it. So I’ll just say this. It’s an honor, okay?”

But their plan for ‘one and done’ is tossed out the window when Becca accepts a job at the veteran’s retreat where Griff lives and works, and they very quickly realise that once is not going to be enough. And so begins a whole lot of hotness as they throw themselves into exploring everything that is brewing between them. And more than just sex, they open up and talk, they learn each other, and they easily and naturally fall into something that neither of them have any desire to stop.

He couldn’t help himself—he kissed her. Her mouth was soft and hot and so, so hungry. As if up to this point, she’d been holding something back, and now she was giving everything to him. He wasn’t sure he could take it. He was going to catch fire and burn up.

It’s passionate and intense, and I fell right along with them as everything began to change.

“You killed my fear of complications. Killed it dead. I want complications with you.”

The character development is fantastic as Griff and Becca expose their hearts and their deepest vulnerabilities with each other, and support and encourage each other to truly start living their lives. I loved watching things shift and deepen between them, and I love the impact that they have on each other as they grow closer and closer.

But they have a lot they need to deal with, and the demons from the past are not easy to overcome. My heart ached for them through the ups and downs as they sorted through their issues and worked to figure out what they truly wanted, and I couldn’t put my kindle down as it all played out.

It was actually painful to want that. To feel like this again. He was walking on a tightrope and he was going to fall, any minute

I loved this story. It’s wonderfully character-driven, and Becca and Griff both shine as two people fighting hard to move forward with their lives. The sexy time is steaming and the love story is fun, emotional, and so, so beautiful.

4 stars!

The first story in Serena Bell’s Returning Home series about wounded war veterans readjusting to life back home, Hold on Tight, made my best romances of 2014 list. Five years later, I’m happy to say that the author hasn’t lost her touch when it comes to giving the reader an emotional, heartfelt and sexy read with the latest book in the series, Holding Out.

Becca Drake is finding that the dating scene is really complicated, particularly when her prospective partners find out she’s a virgin. Then they are either creepers who are much too interested in her sexual status or they don’t want anything to do with her at all. The solution to this dilemma seems to be to find someone willing to ‘do the deed’ with her to solve her problem once and for all. And who better than the single man in her circle of friends, Griff Ambrose. Okay, so he also happens to be a friend of her brother-in-law Nate, and works with him at a retreat for returned veterans. But if they can keep it on the down low, it’ll be a one-time thing that with any luck will leave them both satisfied and ready to look elsewhere for full time companionship.

Griff doesn’t know what to think when Becca propositions him. He knows just how attractive, fun, and sexy she is, and part of him is definitely flattered by the request; clearly the men who’ve turned her down for being a virgin are fools, and if there’s one thing he’s good at lately, it’s giving a girl a good time. Yes, it could get complicated if Nate, her sister Alia, or any of their other close friends find out, but although his initial reaction is ‘No way!’, he changes his mind after he realizes that Becca might look elsewhere and that at least with him, he’ll know she’s getting a good and safe time.

Griff goes all out in providing Becca with a night she’ll never forget. In fact, it’s so good that he doesn’t want it to be their only night together, and nor does she. They are both on board with having a secret affair for a few weeks while Becca is looking for a new job and working part time at the retreat center. But as they get to know each other and share things that draw them closer together, is it going to be so easy to go their separate ways?

Holding Out turns out to be a fitting title for this romance. Becca has been holding out for the right man to give her a really good first-time sexual experience and she definitely picks a winner in Griff. I think it’s fair to say that everyone who reads this book is going to wish they had a man like Griff in their life. He wines and dines Becca, rents a fancy hotel room, checks in with her for consent at every step of the way, and basically ruins her for any other man. Not that Griff would find that upsetting at all – except that he’s not supposed to be interested in any kind of permanent thing with Becca.

Griff doesn’t do relationships, not since his wife divorced him. The day he arrived home from what he planned would be his last military mission was the worst day of his life when he discovered she had left him and was involved with another man, one who wasn’t in the military. Though she’s now remarried and got the house in the divorce, he still hasn’t been able to retrieve his stuff from the basement. She tries to contact him but he avoids her. He’s just not ready to face her, or the real reasons why he can’t move forward with a new woman. Griff is holding out – and holding back – from facing some serious events that trigger his PTSD and until he faces them he won’t be able to be anyone’s real partner.

What I enjoy most about this series is the author’s ability to create characters readers want to see succeed and gain a real measure of happiness, to combat the trying circumstances they’ve faced, especially the soldiers, in their efforts to move forward with their lives. The veteran’s retreat where secondary (and previous book) characters Jake and Nate work, where Griff lives and works and where new characters are introduced, is a safe space to share their fears, worries, hopes and dreams. While Griff has managed to keep his real pain under wraps, with Becca’s support and understanding he’s able to finally confront some of those issues that have haunted him. As for Becca, she may not have been in a war, but she grew up with a depressed and unreliable mother and it was her older sister Alia who took care of her. Alia is still filling that parental role, something Becca no longer needs but has been unable to make clear to her overprotective sister. So naturally, if anyone is going to find out about Griff and Becca’s fling, it’s going to be her big sister (ouch). Becca is learning though, to put her foot down, speak up, and value herself. And soon enough Griff is going to have to choose whether he wants to live in the past, or take a chance on someone and something new.

The perfect mix of emotional and heart-wrenching moments, sexy and fun love scenes, and camaraderie between friends make Holding Out an excellent read from start to finish. It’s another great addition to the Returning Home series and I hope it won’t be the last.

This was the first book that I have read from Serena Bell and I am really glad that I found her. I really enjoyed this book. It was a friends to lovers book which is one of my favorite romances. I like that I didn’t have to read the previous books to know what was going on in their story. You get to revisit with other characters but with this being my first book by this author, I didn’t really feel like I was losing out on Griff and Becca’s story. I loved the journey each character had to do within themselves before they could be fully there for each other and get their HEA. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

The story has laughs, pain, sadness, and heartbreak.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Hold on Tight (Returning Home, #1)
Can't Hold Back (Returning Home #2)
To Have and to Hold (Returning Home, #3)

This is Becca and Griff’s story. Becca wants to lose her virginity and she knows who she wants to help. No way is Griff helping her. She is his friend’s little sister and he is not doing commitment. But really, it’s just a request and he can just avoid her if it gets crazy after. Problem is now she is working at his work and they are practically falling all over each other at work. What they both thought would be one and done is turning to more then either of them ever thought. Should they try for more or try and avoid each other.

I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

I simply adored Holding Out. It was sweet and sexy. I especially loved the way the things started between Griff and Becca and how their relationship progressed. I also loved their journeys individually and collectively. I definitely recommend this book and series.

While I LOVED the previous installments in the series, this one just wasn't for me. First of it felt VERY different from the previous ones, the issues it deals with and mostly the WAY it is dealt with. For me the main problem with this book was the amount of sex, sex talk and constant thoughts about sex. If I could I would have deleted round 90% of that and THEN this book would have been GREAT. I just felt like instead of DEALING with anything really, they turn to sex as a sort of escape. It was even in conversations, a real meaningful conversation would end with a sex innuendo instead of feeling like there's a real progress being made. It's OBVIOUS for me that this exact issue for me could be a TURN ON for someone else - books are subjective and that's the beauty of it, right?

Griff Ambrose & Becca Drake have known each other for a while now. He is friends with Nate who is married to Becca's sister - Alia. But it was mostly a casual sort of friendship. They would meet on family and friends meetups and that's about it. Everyone knows Griff is a "player", and Becca is quite a sheltered girl who wants to be brave and strong but finds it hard to date men since she is 24 and still a virgin. For some reason guys are freaked out about that and she had enough.. Which is how she finds herself asking Griff to "help her out" - just a one time thing - like he does.. Griff accepts and though they have their own rules once Becca is back for two weeks working in Jake's resort (where Griff also works) they find it hard to keep their hands from one another.. and the big question is - what happens next..

Becca had a very difficult up bringing with Alia being a mother figure to her and even now, so many years later Alia finds it hard to treat Becca as anything else than a daughter. She fears for her, she wants her to be happy but mostly SAFE. She doesn't approve of her being with Griff as she knows he will break her heart once he is over her.. She also knows from Nate that Griff was once married and when his marriage fell apart Griff was left heart broken and it's not clear if he is even over his ex-wife Marina. Yet Becca wants to HAVE FUN. She enjoys being with Griff, not just in bed or wherever they get it going, but just talking. He makes her feel so much better, competent, strong and smart. He empowers her and she feels great opening up to him and surprisingly (to him) Griff finds himself talking to her, and sharing things he can barely utter. But there are still things he keeps to himself because he isn't sure how to deal with those - Marina for sure, but also his flashbacks from his service. He tries to make Becca conquer her fears but he himself doesn't really act as he encourages her to.. He feels a hypocrite which is exactly what makes him try to take bettering steps himself.

It was sweet seeing these two fall for one another. I'm half sure they were on their way there from the very start. Griff's efforts for Becca's first time were BEYOND amazing. I don't know if ANY girl gets what Becca got for her first time.. Especially from a guy who isn't suppose to stick around.. They click from the start, they have many things in common though it doesn't seem like it. Mostly, for me, they both needed to grow up and realize if they WANT something they need to work for it because it's WORTH it. I guess Alia and Nate's meddling into their business didn't really help it only made them both even more insecure about their feelings for one another..

This book was truly a struggle for me and it's NOT what I was expecting. I liked both Griff and Becca but I was sick and tired of them being sexually obsessed about each other. For me it ruined the romance and also the relationship progression. I swear the first 3rd of the book is ONLY sex. Sex talk, sex thoughts and intentions and then sex scene. A THIRD OF THE BOOK! I wanted SOMETHING to happen other than sex but alas, I had to wait and that I did. I guess I got what I wanted in the end but I was damn frustrated till we got there.

Are you heavily into sexy times? If the answer is YES you should definitely grab this one!

I kindly received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Holding Out is the fourth in Serena Bell's Returning Home series, about veterans returning to civilian life after service. It's about Griffin Ambrose and Becca Drake. Becca's sister Alia is married to Nate (the focus of Can't Hold Back, the second in this incredible series), who works with Griff at R&R, a retreat focused on serving veterans and providing care and services to help them heal and reintegrate.

Griff's been deeply wounded by the devastation of his wife leaving him while he was overseas. He's determined to protect his heart by guarding his emotions more securely than Fort Knox. If you want orgasms, he's your man. But he doesn't do relationships, period.

Becca's finally got a handle on her life, and New Becca is going to stand up for herself, whether is at the workplace or with dates. One of the things on her to-do list is finding someone to help her get rid of that now inconvenient virginity.

Becca and Griff have had a chance to get to know each other a bit as friends through get togethers, and during one of their conversations, Becca reveals that she's been looking for someone to help her punch that V-card. Griff declines, but he can't stop thinking about her request.

Becca figures Griff's perfect for the job--they're friends, and he doesn't want more than a one-and-done anyway. But reality sometimes has a way of being different than we originally plan...

Serena Bell's story is sexy and emotional and incredibly satisfying. Not only are the characters real and three-dimensional, they are a part of a warm and supportive community of the same. The Returning Home universe is one where the characters exist not in a vacuum but in a thriving network, where friends and family lend us strength and support and also don't pull their punches when that is needed. Becca and Griff navigate the sometimes choppy waters from a single night to understanding what they truly want, and being brave enough to work for that. And never alone.

Holding Out is a deeply satisfying read. I look forward to more of Ms Bell's writing.

Griff, just needs to hurry his woman along at times, “I think we should probably go to dinner. Right now. The sooner we eat, the sooner we can have dessert.” Becca needs to make her man work for things at times, “hey,” Becca said. “Eyes up. Groveling before ogling.” I liked this book, I loved Griff.

There has never been a time when I finished a book I didn’t like and I blamed it on a case of “it’s not the book, it’s me.” But this time, that really is the case because I knew the basic plot line of Holding Out, knew it is one I don’t generally like, and I chose to read it anyway. Which begs the reason why…

Basically, I suffer from OCBSD. Obsessive compulsive book series disorder. It’s where, if you’ve read all the other books in the series, you are completely unable to NOT read the next one. It shouldn’t have been a problem here because I really liked the first three books in this series about men returning from war with their hearts, bodies, and minds bruised (figuratively speaking, because sometimes it’s been more than just “a bruise”). All three books were heartbreaking and heartfelt, and pulled heavily on my heart strings. So even though I’ve read a couple other Serena Bell books that I didn’t care for, I was hopeful a return to her Returning Home series would give me more of what I’ve liked from her past writing and less of what I didn’t in her more recent books.

Long story short, I was mostly disappointed.

As I said, I’m not a fan of the storyline this book is based on. Becca is still a virgin at 24, and on a whim asks friend Griff to dispel her of that status. Griff, of course, has several reasons not to...Becca is his good friend’s sister-in-law, and my personal “favorite” - he’s not the relationship type (and has spent the past couple years trying to “bang enough women to forget” his ex-wife). Griff tells her no, then lets his inner- toddler loose by deciding he will do it, but only after another young man shows interest in Becca.

He then solidifies my dislike of him even further by starting their date conversation with “So. Um. Tell me shit about you.” Right sentiment. But that execution? Terrible.

The first 35 percent of the book is all leading up to “the big night.” Which just seemed like a lot of pages to spend on this one single event. Especially when so much was focused on what was going on with their hormones. And that's not what I want to read about. I’m more interested in what’s going on in their hearts and their minds.

Both Becca and Griff actually have some serious issues from past relationships that make things dicey between them. Griff’s wife left him unceremoniously, Becca has issues from her first serious boyfriend, AND from the way she grew up. Add in friends and family chirping in their ears, giving warnings and advice, and you’ve got a compelling story. When the author had them developing their relationship and dealing with their issues, I really liked the story. I had hope things would end on a high note!

But then we get the requisite misunderstanding, followed by miscommunication, which leads to the stereotypical breakup.

And then I was back to being disappointed. Even though I ultimately liked how things were resolved, I would have liked to see more time spent with Becca and Griff developing their relationship outside the bedroom, and more time with them working through each other’s issues. Instead we get a whole lot of steamy times.

The strength of the other books in this series were the heart issues, not the physical ones. That’s what I was really hoping to get here. But we didn’t. So I’m going to take the blame for not liking this one. I’m still a little disappointed though that the story didn’t move me as much as the others in this series.

The fourth book in this series features Becca, the younger sister of Alia, the heroine of book 2, Can't Hold Back. In that book, Alia introduced Nate, the hero, to Becca rather than dating him herself because she'd always taken care of Becca and wanted her to have a good man. That didn't work out too well for anyone, and Alia and Nate finally ended up together. From the glimpses we got of Becca in that book, I was looking forward to her story as she came off as a level-headed young woman who'd been sheltered by her older sister due to a learning disability, but who was taking charge of her own life and trying to work through her own lack of confidence. It's absolutely not necessary, though, to have read that book (or any of the others in the series) to greatly enjoy this one.

As the book opens, Becca, who lives in Seattle, has just found out that she's losing her job as a receptionist at a day spa, so she's come to the Oregon coast to visit Alia and figure out what to do next. She also has another problem, which is that she's 24 yrs old and still a virgin for various reasons, and it's now becoming a problem in her dating life since the guys she's meeting either don't want to sleep with her because of it, or have a fetish about it. Poor Becca can't figure out which is worse, but she does know that she just wants it gone!

At Alia's, she once again connects with Griff, a good friend of her sister and brother-in-law's. The two have always been powerfully attracted to each, but Griff, a veteran, is still hung up on his ex-wife, who walked out on him while he was on a tour of duty. Griff has closed himself off to love and limited himself to one-night stands ever since his ex left. Because of the attraction between them, and knowing that he's an all-around good guy, Becca proposes to Griff that he do her the favor of taking care of her pesky virginity with the understanding that it will be a "one and done" deal. Of course, they are both lying to themselves and there's no going back once they become intimate.

This was a lovely story, fairly low angst, although with plenty of strong emotions and two engaging, likable lead characters who were easy to root for and whom I thought were very well-matched. Both Griff and Becca had some emotional roadblocks to work through but I love that they approached things as adults and were both striving to grow, although at least initially, Becca was more in touch with her needs than Griff was. I think that Serena Bell excels in depicting characters who are on an emotional journey to move forward and get past trauma that has happened to them in the past. This was a great end to a wonderful series.

I received an ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed this book.

So far every book in this series has made me love the characters even more. Holding Out definitely isn't an exception. Once again this book pulled me right in from the start and made me love the characters. The way Serena Bell writes sucks you in and won't let you go!

We already met Becca in Can't Hold Back so I was really excited to see she was also getting a story. She's had enough of being a virgin, but just can't seem to find a guy that's suitable. Griff is a part of her sister's friend group and she could see herself with him. He fits everything with being sexy, single, they're friends and she knows he doesn't want anything more. So they agree he'll help her out and it will be a one time thing, but can it stay that way?

I loved both characters in this book and the journey they are on. Becca didn't have an easy childhood and adding a learning disability to the list and that didn't really help her be confident. Her sister still treats her like she needs help to make decisions and doesn't see her as the adult she's become. I loved how Becca started seeing herself as a new person and going after what she wanted. Becca can be a feisty one and I loved seeing her discover a new side of herself.

Griff is also another character we've gotten a glimpse of in other stories and I liked how he finally got into the story! What I loved the most about Griff's story is that we don't know everything right away. In the previous books, we know a bit of what happened. This time we learn about Griff's story gradually. His body came back whole, but his spirit needs some more guidance.

Griff is a special one. After a failed marriage, he isn't sure how to open his heart again. There's something about Becca though. Even though it's just a deal, he's so sweet wanting to make everything special for her. Also, Griff may seem like a macho guy, he's actually really sweet and caring. For him this was also a story of healing. Opening up about what happened and how he's feeling was such an incredible journey to read about.

Don't get me started on Becca and Griff together. They're so much fun. The flirting, joking, sexy moments and their very serious conversations. I think they bring out the best in each other and needed each other more than they realized!

On top of a great love story, I loved reading about all of the characters we've met along the way. That's my favorite thing about series like this, little glimpses into the lives of the characters we get in previous books. I also think that's a compliment to the author for making me love all of her characters. Holding Out and the other three books in this series will be ones I won't forget about.

Having read and loved a previous book by Serena Bell, I couldn’t wait to read her newest book Holding Out. As the fourth book in the Returning Home series, this book focuses on Griff Ambrose and Becca Drake as they navigate their way through ups and downs in order to be together. Now it is important to state that although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.

At the beginning of the story we get to meet Griff Ambrose, an army veteran who works at R&R, a retreat center that helps veterans by proving all types of care and services that they might need. He has been able to maintain close friendships with those that work with him and that has helped him a lot. Griff has been through so many ups and downs. After his wife left him while he was overseas, Griff has been struggling with PTSD and his inability of wanting to get into another serious relationship has turned him into a bit of a player. But there is one woman who has managed to catch his attention, too bad she is off-limits as she happens to be related to one of his closest friends. He shouldn’t want Becca Drake, but when she comes to him asking for his help he will have to decide if it’s worth losing friendships in order to help her worth it in the end.

Becca Drake’s childhood is one full of tragedy and sadness. She has not only had family problems, but she has also struggled at school as well. It left her wondering if she was ever going to be good at anything. Her self-esteem took a hit when her ex made her wait until they got married in order to have sex, but he moved on and therefore she remained a virgin ever since. She is now twenty-four and she wants to create a new Becca and wants to get rid of her v-card as soon as possible. She wasn’t looking for anyone in particular, but her attraction to Griff made him the perfect candidate if she can one convince to do the deed things would all be better. But she wasn’t expecting to really get to know him in the process and now her heart is about to get hurt again. Griff made it clear that he doesn’t do relationships and she just has to find a way to make him see that they might just be perfect for each other.

I very much enjoyed reading this story, it was well written and thought out. Serena Bell has managed to deliver such a great story with fully developed characters to keep you reading until the very end. It’s evident that both of the characters have their past and obstacles to overcome, but they are able to help each other in the end and we get to see the process from beginning to end. We do get to see characters from the past previous books making appearances which added more to the story. The author touches on PTSD and grief of losing a loved one which I think she did a good job on. The ending is sweet and ties the story nicely. All in all, if you are looking for a great book full of romance and good background stories then I would highly recommend reading this book and any other by the author! :)

Holding Out is a delightfully sweet, steamy and swoony romance that made me smile, filled me with wonderful feels, and undeniably captured my heart.

Becca is done being a virgin. She wants to lose her V-card and sets her eyes on her sister’s ridiculously sexy friend, Griff. While reluctant at first, Griff can't seem to forget about Becca and soon finds himself unable to resist her request. They make a deal. One and done. But, is it? What happens when they realize they want more?

I love these types of stories. I think they’re funny, seductive, and wildly entertaining. When Serena Bell asked me to read and review this book, I obviously couldn’t resist! The premise for Holding Out sounded so much fun and I just knew I would really enjoy it. And, I definitely did and was simply enamored with Bell’s writing. With a heartfelt storyline, intriguing and lovable characters, deliciously irresistible romance, and so much heart, I easily fell in love with this book and could not stop reading.

Griff and Becca are both a bit protective with their hearts. They have a painful and sad past that makes them both very cautious when it comes to love. It was heartbreaking at times to read about their insecurities and fears, but it was also beautifully real and incredibly affecting. I enjoyed their character development and how they both supported, encouraged, and helped each other. Griff and Becca were a good fit. I loved seeing their relationship become something more and for them to finally realize that they deserve a HEA. I adored them as individuals and loved them even more together. The chemistry between them is sexy, intense, and hot, and I enjoyed every moment.

I really liked the supporting characters. I loved the amazing friendships and how they are all very supportive of each other. They are just so charming and I could just picture myself having dinner with them and playing Taboo. They’re just so awesome and adorable. I’m definitely interested in reading their own stories.

A wonderfully emotional and captivating romance, Holding Out by Serena Bell is truly a lovely read. It’s well-written, absolutely charming, incredibly touching, and so beautiful in many ways. Cannot wait to read more books by Bell and fall in love with her stories.

If you’re looking for a romance that’s adorably funny, steamy, and full of heart, then I HIGHLY recommend you add this book on your TBR.

I received an advance reader copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Main characters: Becca Drake, younger sister to Alia, and drifting along through life. Griffin Ambrose, mutual friend, supposed good time guy who hides his pain down deep.

Why you should read it: Oh how I love Ms. Bell! And I have a particular fondness for this series too. All of the books in this series deal with some pretty hefty issues such as PTSD and both physical and mental trauma. At NO point did it feel inauthentic, or as though there was an agenda behind the plot. It’s good storytelling – making you care about these characters for their humanity. I have read some books set in the military world and some have been good, and others have basically read like recruitment campaigns. This series has neither sought to glamourise, nor demonise the military, it has been a significant part of the story, but the connections between the characters are human ones. I connected to these characters because I responded to their vulnerability and their search for love. I loved Becca and Griff because they have no clue what they ultimately want out of life, or how to get there (Hello! I hear you!). They’ve both been through periods of difficulty, and are keen to move on with their lives, but are unsure how. Their attraction and their relationship grew at a steady pace and I enjoyed the realness of it. Griff is a good guy – he’s not an alpha, and he’s not a jerk, he’s just trying to get his life back on track and avoiding heartbreak if he can. Becca has also been through the mill, but she’s not sitting around having a pity party. She is trying to go get her life. She also has her head firmly screwed on. I can’t tell you the number of books I read by women authors that seek to slut shame other female characters in the book – this was not a part of this storyline and I was so thankful that Becca actually calls it out at one point in the book! I want to read more characters like this!

What you may not like: I’m not too sure – this book is low on angst and manufactured drama – if you’re used to elaborate scenarios and engineered plotlines to create endless misunderstandings between the characters, then this may not be the read for you. There is some interference from well-meaning but overbearing family members, but that’s the extent of it! I enjoyed this book for its lack of drama for drama’s sake – it was engaging and real and that’s what I needed.

Rating: 5/5 for a sweet, sexy and funny read. I loved it. Hope you do too.

After a painful divorce Griffin Ambrose has turned himself into somewhat of a ladies man, the kind that doesn't do attachments and can only promise one night of fun... the emotionally unavailable kind of man. The last time he put his whole heart into a relationship it wound up shattered into a million pieces and his girl ended up in the arms of another man. So the idea of opening himself up to love again is a hard no, and keeping someone around long enough to catch feelings is far too dangerous so it's a one and done kind of thing these days. That is until... Becca Drake comes crashing into his world and makes him an offer he can't bring himself to refuse.

She has forbidden written all over her, being that she is the sister of one of his best friends, but the idea of letting another man take from her what she wants to offer up to him, is something he can't let happen. She has never given herself to a man, and for some reason she has sets her sights on him, saying that a tumble between the sheets with him would be the perfect way to relinquish her of her "V" card. In her eyes he's safe because one: she knows him; and two: he's not into commitments or love, and neither is she. She just wants one night of fun, what harm could really come of that?

Holding Out is a perfectly penned tale that will rattle your emotions, touch your heart, and keep you captivated from start to finish. As soon as these two wounded souls wandered onto the page I found myself becoming enamored with them and the story they had to tell. They had pain radiating off of them, but I also saw a lot of hope there too. They were so adamant that they couldn't catch feelings from one night, but they were sorely mistaken. You could see that they needed each other, there was an instant chemistry, but there was also a deep emotional connection too. This story did a number on me, I felt every ounce of pain, but I also felt the hopeful stirrings new love brings, and that did my heart SO good, what a beautiful story. I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, what you find waiting for you is certain to squeeze your heart!

First rule of Operation V-Card is, there is no Operation V-Card...
I absolutely loved Holding Out! Griff and Becca's story was just wonderful. It was sexy, funny, and fun--with a refreshing lack of BS (beyond the traditional "we're just going to do a one and done and move on like nothing happened" that a premise like this demands--but let me tell you, when the delusional "one and done" is as good as this one is, I am here for it). They did attempt to hide their "Surprise! Even a 'three and free' isn't enough!" sexcapades from their friends, but that lasted about a hot minute (with a painfully funny and awkward moment) and that too was a big ol' checkmark in the plus column of this book.

Even when the relationship's black moment comes--and boy, does it come--the way Becca and Griff each reacted to it meshed up perfectly with their characters. They both had a part to play in the disaster, and they both had realizations to come to and reparations to make. It's more of a mutual confession and declaration that gets them back together than a grovel--and it was perfect.

Since Griff and Becca are both invested in the R&R community, past series characters are throughout the book. If you haven't read their stories yet, it's not a problem--this book works fine as a standalone. I'm going to bet, though, that you'll enjoy them all so much you'll want to go back and read all the rest of the books in the series--you have been warned!

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book (given by the author)...

3.75 stars

This book is majorly steamy ;)

We meet Griff and Becca in Can't Hold Back so we already have a little background on both characters: Griff, is part of R&R first as patient and now worker, and Becca, is Alia's baby sister.

This was a very enjoyable read, I always love books where the hero is oh so willing to help the heroine out as long as they follow the rules, but unfortunately is never works out as they plan. I will say I did love Griff from the very beginning, but Becca did get on my nerves at times. Becca didn't like that Alia kept mothering her, but she never really did anything about it until a big point in the story. Also the "New Becca" thing was endearing at first but as the story progressed it did get annoying, it's one thing to say you are a new you or working on a new you, but it's a whole another thing when you just say it repeatedly and don't take any steps to make changes. Also I have to say that lack of communication and outrageous assumptions led to our couples' major issues especially since they kept listening to other people's opinions.

Also I still don't like Marina, sorry but that what she did was so NOT okay.

It was great to see the characters from the previous books and see how their lives are going; Sam is all grown up now, that was nice to read.

I wonder if CJ will be next?

Becca caught my interest from book number two when her insecurity made her so fragile due to a lifelong learning disability that made reading difficult and therefore all of her schooling hard and mostly unsuccessful. She didn't have parental help or guidance and it was left to her big sister Alia to first notice her issues, and then help her. The influence wasn't enough to fully make up for the damage it did to her self-confidence. Now, however, Becca is all grown up and she's trying to embrace a new version of herself in Becca, 2.0. I loved her growth to this more confident, decisive and secure woman. She also is still a virgin and annoyed with this and realizes it's far past time to correct this.

Enter her friend Griff who is someone she is both attracted to and comfortable with. He's friends with her sister and brother-in-law, and it's at a game night something changes between them and the sparks fly and grow and it's decided: he's going to help her solve her virginity problem.

Which he does and does so well... there's no way they are going to follow their own "rules" for her deflowering and do it again... but first they have to figure it out and there is a unexpected emotional connection that forms after this that's far beyond the hot sex they find together.

Griff has own issues with PTSD and flashbacks that Becca witnesses first hand which also incorporates the pain his ex-wife caused him, but Becca is convinced he still loves her.

The book explores their deepening connection as they soon realize what they share is far deeper than a one night learning session for Becca. Griff seems to be one of the few who see's past Becca's learning disability as a problem and tries to help her see the gift she could give to others in her compassion and understanding for what they go through. He encourages her to tutor students with him and shows Becca how far she's come from the fragile teen who didn't know herself.

This book touched my heart and mostly it's Becca for me. As someone who has a child with a learning disability it's hard to explain to others who haven't witnessed it, the damage it can do to their self esteem and inner self. I loved how well done this aspect of Becca was done and also having her find a new and stronger self as she's growing and realizing what she has to offer others. I also loved the moment she realizes she can help other kids because she's been there... and in the end how Becca finds Becca 3.0 and by then the journey to her is amazing. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Another great read by Serena Bell! I think Holding Out was my favorite yet in the series! I absolutely adored the story line. I was pleasantly surprised because I found myself not liking Becca in Alia's book. However, she definitely turned herself around and made me like her in her own novel. And Griff. UGH. I knew I was going to love him. I found myself liking him in the other series as a secondary character so I was super excited to find more about him.

Now, with all of that said, even if you don't read the other books first, you won't be lost. This can definitely be read as a standalone - I think it just increases the enjoyment if you have read the previous books because all of the secondary characters are more formed for you. However, that is my personal opinion.

Holding Out is a heart warming, inspiring, steamy romance between Griff and Becca. The way the relationship was formed was a bit unconventional but definitely worked for them. The writing was great and kept me entertained. I definitely always want more of Serena's writing! *Also, one of my favorite things is the donuts and coffee remark but you have to read to find out what I am talking about* Don't worry - it is swoon-worthy!

*Received this book from the author for my honest opinion*

This is the fourth book in Serena Bell's Returning Home series and fans will recognize the two main protagonists, Griff and Becca, since they've been a part of the series from the beginning. They get their own book now and what a story it is, with Becca wanting to get rid of her V-card and Griff being allergic to being The One but at the same time hates the thought that some idiot might do the deed without taking Becca's feelings into consideration. It sounds like a fluffy story with lots of laughs and sexy times, which by the way Ms. Bell delivers in spades! But its also about two people who appears not quite what they seem. Both Griff and Becca suffers from some insecurities that to the present still affects them and whatever decisions they make. I do love how everything plays out but probably not so much the big misunderstanding that occurs between Becca and Griff. I do understand that its a plot device to get these two to realize something in their personal life that needs fixing before they can actually be together, so it does serve a purpose plus it was short live, so definitely just a minor blip. Still Holding Out is definitely sweet, extremely hot and poignant. A definite winner in romance.

Becca has had with all the guys that are turned off when they find out she's a virgin. She's on a mission now to take care of what she sees as a problem, and she decides that Griff would be the right guy to help her. I really loved how Becca talked about her virginity being an issue -- it's a reality that some guys think that a woman will expect forever under those circumstances.

After Griff's wife left him without telling him, he's sworn off any relationships, preferring to just settle for one-nighters. At first, he's shy about helping Becca with her problem, but then realizes that if he doesn't help her, someone else will, and that just won't do.

I really loved these two together. The totally connected for me and I was rooting for them all the way. But when Griff's ex-wife shows up in town, miscommunications and old hurts take everything that Becca and Griff have built together and it could be the end of something good. You probably know how this ends, since it's a romance and all, so I won't spoil it with the details.

I was left with a smile on my face after reading Holding Out. I can't ask for much more by way of a terrific reading experience. Recommended.

I have read all of the books in this series, which always makes it difficult for me to know if it can be read as a stand alone when familiar characters are a factor in the story. That being said, I do think this book would be ok to read if you haven’t read the previous ones. This series focuses on veterans returning home and dealing with the life they must now lead with war wounds, both internal and external. I have enjoyed them all and gained new appreciation for the difficulties they are facing. This book is Griff's coming home to a lot of emotional upheaval. His war wounds are internal and learning to try to deal with PTSD is part of the story. The relationship part is falling for someone he feels he must stay away from. Because of Becca’s inexperience in the bedroom, there are a lot of sexy times and pages devoted to her gaining the experience that "New" Becca seeks. Even though Griff struggles with understanding emotional things, he has the physical stuff down pat. I like the trope of the virgin looking to a sort-of-friend to gain sexual experience. Since I have read the other books, I also liked seeing more of previous MCs. I would recommend all of the series.

This is book #4, in the Returning Home series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader understanding, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this series in order.

Griff finds himself attracted to the most off limits woman. She is the little sister of his friend. He also does not do commitment. Best to avoid her for now. If only she wasn't so attractive......

Becca has a thing for Griff. If he could help her with her predicament, things would be so much better for her. She just needs someone she trusts for a one and done. As long as nobody starts to have feelings for the other.....

This was a great story. I loved the banter. These characters so obviously should be together. The pace was good, the heat was such a good build, and goes great with the series.

If ever a book were suitably named, it would be this one. Griff and Becca certainly know how to hold out on each other - except in bed, that is. Both are so closed off to relationships, each with their own reasons, which makes them kind of perfect for each other. They certainly have great chemistry, and I loved how they pulled each other out of their comfort zones without even trying. This fourth in the series can be read as a standalone, but for those who have followed from the beginning, we get lots of time with the whole gang, so we see where each couple is now. As for this book. Griff and Becca are a great addition to a wonderful series.

I love Griff and Becca's story. Griff is a player, trying to sleep with as many women as he can to forget his ex. Becca is a virgin who wants Griff to help her out. First he declines, then when he agrees, he finds that one time isnt enough for him. They both realize they bring out the best in each other. One snag, his ex shows up. Becca sees them come out of Griffs apartment and hug. Did Becca misread the situation or jump to conclusions? This is my first read of this author and it will not be my last. tThis is part of a series but is definitely a standalone .

This is the fourth book in Serena Bell’s Returning Home series. I really enjoyed them all, but this was probably my least favorite. It was good seeing what the couples from books 1-3 were up to, but Becca and Griff’s story didn’t resonate with me. Partly because it’s a Take My Virginity story, which I don’t love, and partly because it felt really rushed. One minute, they were making rules for their One and Done, and a few chapters later, they were in love. The other books in this series has a lot more depth, and we get to know the MC much better throughout their journeys. That being said, Serena Bell is one of my favorite authors, and I will put off reading other books so I can read one of hers.
